Water Butt Smelling Stagnant

Every year my water butt smelt until I came across this article on the net extolling the virtues of EM Ceramics to stop rainwater turning stagnant. Having tried them out I would recommend them.

looks suspiciously like advertising to me.
I find a well fitted lid keeps out light, mosquitoes and keeps water fresh. Seemples.

I agree that a well fitting lid is the best. My husband let some hedge trimmings get in a small hole on top and I didn't notice and boy, did it smell! Also there was a programme on the radio the other day about mosquitoes and how important it is to keep our water butts free of the little devils.
I had this problem every summer with my water butt until i got a rainwater terrace water butt that flushes the water out everytime it rains so if i dont use the water quick enough next time it rains there is fresh water in the tanks plus the lids keep the mor
