Lupins

Hi,

About a month ago I planted some lupin seeds from the pods and they have germinated and sprouted into tiny lupin plants. I am currebtly storing them in the house in a tray with lots of compartments. What is my next step as I am very new to this.

Thanks

  • I would put them in a tray of soil and leave them outside all winter. They are hardy and will germinate in spring.

  • I'd also move them outside.  I've had them self seed in my garden.  The only problem is they all tend to end up as a bit of a weak pink colour.  They probably won't look like your parent plant, but I generally like the interest of not quite knowing what you're getting image  Good luck with them!

If they're small plants it might be worth transplanting them now into individual 3" pots to give them room to develop some roots.  If this warm weather continues they'll probably put on a fair bit of growth before the winter and you wouldn't want to restrict them.

Look out for aphids in the spring!  They love young lupin shoots.

  • Thanks for your advice everyone, pleased i joined the forum and asked the questionsimage

  • I just love Lupins but unfortunately cannot manage to keep them; (I think the slugs get at them before I have a chance to enjoy their beautiful colour displays!)

None the less, I will keep trying!

are you growing them in seedling pots ? if you are, then let them grow 2 true leaves then put them in to 3 inch pots. grow them on until you are ready to plant them out .

  • I usually buy good plants from the nursery on individual pots!

Still no luck!..as I said before, I think the slugs get a good feast before I have a chance to get the pleasure of their colours!
