Hedge ideas

Needing ideas for a quick(ish) growing hedge that I can put up to hide a rather unsightly extension going up next door.  Any ideas?  It would be on a mix of sand and clay soil, which can be rather prone to a little waterlogging in the winter.  I'd like something that isn't conifer if possible and/or something that I can still grow plants near the base of.  It would be great if it had some interest in either leaf colour or flowers or scent.  Fine for it to go over the 6ft, in fact the sooner the better but I don't want 30 ft trees to deal with image  A lot to ask I know  image

  • I'm growing a crab apple hedge. Blossom for bees and other insects in spring and fruit for the birds in autumn as well as pretty autumn foliage. Its not too expensive if you buy them bare root in the winter.

I think I used hedgenursery.co.UK. Worth a look at their website for some inspiration and ideas if nothing else, as they have lots of information about the characteristics of all different types of hedging and suitability for different situations.

Hope that helps. I know I spent ages agonising over what to get!

How about rosa rugosa? Flowers and hips.

  • Ooh Rosa rugosa, good call. I nearly went with Rosa rugosa but along the driveway was too spiny with having small children. It is fast growing too and will grow pretty much anywhere.

  • Ohh fab ideas thanks!  Maybe a mix of the crab apples and the rose image  Going to go look for a supplier now image
