Help with Wisteria

Hi I have a newly planted Chinese Wisteria plant which has become quite vigourous throughout the summer and now has about six foot of healthy looking growth and am wondering how I look after it through the winter in terms of pruning etc.?

You will need to trim back the whippy bits asap, and then again in the Spring.

  • As it's a young plant I really only have leaves with some shoots growing near the top. How brutal should I be?

  • Because it's only a young plant you should just train and tie-in the longer growths to where you want them as this will form the future structure.  Once it has grown to the size you want, proceed as per fidget's instructions to maximise flowering.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
