cyclamen

Has anyone grown any of the cyclamen that you buy in polystyrene trays labelled as bedding plants. I was wondering how hardy these are. I know they'll last through the winter but will they reliably flower again year after year?

They are usually crosses of Persicum Cyclamen.

Hardiness is disputed but I have found they survive a few degrees of frost quite well, if they survive Winter then they should regrow just fine.

I grow them as houseplants and they seem to flower almost endlessly for 12 months of the year!

  • I think there are different types, some hardier than others. With any luck, the label should tell you.

For real hardiness you want C hederifolium or C. coum. Not as extreme in colour but will be with you for years

If we get another winter like the last those not so hardy ones could well survive.image

  • I bought a pack of three, guaranteed hardy, (quite expensive, especially the white corms!) some arrived quite spongy but I thought I'd pop them all in any way!

I now have pink & white miniature cyclamen (after one winter), spreading around my small garden...very pretty, even though expensive in the first inst.

I've got some in a raised bed close to the house.

Been there for many years and came from a planted xmas house-display. They've even self-sown a few

Pink and red are in flower already.

  • Hello Peter; nice to hear from you!

Mine are the miniature, outdoor hardy ones, (lucky if you can get them to grow in the beginning.

Yes, all cyclamen are so beautiful aren't they?- I too have popped some indoor cyclamen into the garden when I've had enough of them being in the home. Off to watch Gardeners World (wish it was on a bit longer than just a half hour?

    Thanks Rose Ann

Mine came from a basket of plants mum bought me many years ago. I popped the cyclamen into a little raised bed expecting never to see them again, but every year for around 10 yrs now they come back.

    Hope you also have success!

    Pete
