Don't think it's being a cheapskate - I think seeding is the best solution in your circumstances - you can use some of the same seed mix to scatter on the rest of the lawn (after scarifying) and this will blend the edges and make the old 'path' indistinguishable from the lawn.
If you turfed it you'd always have a strip of different looking grass where the path had been.

At least if there's any dips in the soil level in spring you can top up with some soil and seed, and it's not nearly as annoying if you've only shelled out for seed rather than turf!
