Slug pellets and dogs.

Hiya,

Has anyone got any solutions to killing slugs that is animal friendly?

I have planted out my cauliflower and cabbage plants and dont want the slugs to eat them but I have a dog so really worried about using slug pellets.

  • I use SAS spray from the organic gardening catalogue, i spray it directly on the young plants, i dont use any other control now, but you could combine this with beer traps, sacrificial crops and bulky foods like bran/ dog biscuits, the bran etc is supposed to swell inside them and make them burst -yuk! image

    Hi Bekkie,

I will look at that spray, thankyou.

Not sure about the beer trap as dog will probably drink it and end up drunk hehe and also eat the biscuits.

Have you found that the spray works better than slug pellets, I dont like using the pellets as worry about hedgehogs etc aswell as my dog.

  • Ive never used pellets, sorry, im not much help in that department! I do grow lots of brassicas though, that spray is a miracle! you could also try slug gone, thats a wool based mulch that they dont like to cross.

Along with the spray, i hoe often, this helps to break up the pheremone trails the slugs etc leave behind, so they are less likely to go back and visit plants again and again.

Dog biscuits or whatever can be put in a tupperware box with a little hole cut in, so that doggies cant get at them.

Do you have a pond? Attracting slug eating wildlife is another weapon in the fight to keep veggies alive image
  • Oh, i forgot to say that spray was out of stock when i looked yesterday, possibly because ive been banging on about it! But do go back for some, one can lasts ages image

Go out at night and cut any you see in half with a pair of scissors. The bits will be gone by the morning.
