Growing garlic

I grew garlic for the first time this year. Did everything right - bought the bulbs from my local garden centre, planted in my raised bed last autumn, dug them up in July, plaited the bulbs to dry out & they are stored hanging up in my kitchen. Used the first ones yesterday - looked/felt fine until I picked off a couple of bulbs and pressed them in my garlic press. What came out the other side was watery, mushy, odourless and tasteless! Help - where have I gone wrong?

Have to say I've been growing my own garlic for a very long time and I've never used a garlic press. Especially when garlic is fresh, as it is at this time of year, it is enough just to squash it with the side of a knife. I suspect garlic presses don't enhance the taste of the cloves. Try not using one.
  • Did you leave the bulbs upside down to dry out before plaiting? Were the stems dry and brown when you plaited them?
