We've just been offered some frogspawn But we don't have a pond (yet!)
So this thread has been very interesting reading that we may be able to squeeze one into the garden.
Do all you pond aficionados think its necessary/a good idea to have a pump or moving water or would it be ok without?
What are plant recommendations for a small pond (baby bath size rather than washing up bowl I think.) Or anything definitely NOT to plant?
Are preformed ponds better as they provide the different levels for wildlife or is it easier/ better to dig a hole and line? Or just make your own 'levels' for plants and wildlife using rocks or bricks?
Sorry, I'm thinking out loud a bit here. Getting excited!
I'd like to know about the location of a washing up bowl pond. Semi shade I can offer lots, but how about being close to my sitting area during summer? Would potential residents mind me reading a book close to them?
I'm thinking of making a micro pond like yours with my little girl. Did you fill it with rain water or water from the hose? Read somewhere about filling it with rain water as better for wildlife???
Didn't want some huge pond as daughter only 4 (nearly 5) but yours looks brilliant and is just the trick x
I wouldn't fill it with tap water, my tap water smells of bleach. No idea what it added to it, but it's not a pleasant smell. If I build a mini pond I'll fill it with boiled water that I'd run through a coffee filter. Then the rain would top it up eventually?
Not exactly a pond but the old barbeque doubles as a bird bath during the winter. First time I have ever seen a roe deer drink. Wasn't so happy when he went on to eat my newly emerged crocus .
Be happy you don't live in Germany. The first time in 150 years wolves are there and they've caused traffic accident due to spooked horse and worse. Just say: "Oh deer, it could be wolves"
For a mini pond it's perfectly possible to collect enough rainwater - if you don't have a water butt (and why not?) then just leave a couple of buckets or bowls out - it shouldn't take long to collect enough rainwater during February Fill-dyke.
Then get a jamjar and string and gather a jar of water from a nearby pond - it'll act as a 'starter' and although there may only be a very few mini-beasts in there they'll soon multiply.

Thats a different one to the one I was thinking of Lesley. Really clever idea.
Loving this! (could maybe see if my neighbour would have it in their garden.... looks rather smart!

What if the micro pond freezes over during winter? Just make a hole into the ice?
