Hi Snoodle - what about a few apricot/rust coloured verbascums - they look great with grasses, would give you some 'spires' and would start the flowering off a bit earlier?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Didn't think they'd work on my soil, Dove, so had discounted them.
would appreciate thoughts on something a bit earlier though. As Verdun said, it'll be a summer border. Which I don't mind much, but if I can get something earlier in, that'd be a bonus
If you are going with the red/orange theme then geums would be good for earlier - Mrs Bradshaw is an orangey red, and the tangerine series do what it says on the tin!
I grow Helianthus tuberosa. I have 3 metre tall plants at the moment, each with several heads of yellow flowers, albeit small heads in proportion. You can eat the tuber as it is Jerusalem artichoke. You can buy a load of them for less than £1.
I've grown verbascums on heavy clay that baked hard in the summer in Suffolk and on free draining loam here - the consistent requirement seems to be sunshine

Gorgeous Chicky!
They look lovely Chicky
Snoodle, wish I'd taken pics at Wisley, they had loads of grasses around Heleniums, if I remember rightly . . . .
I know, Verd, and appreciate the advice. I'm only teasing
Actually, I am a bit concerned about buying a helenium collection and finding I don't don't do very well with them.
Panda, you must return to Wisley at once and get said photos!
