Chillis on Thai basil

  • I haven't tried them yet, as I was so surprised to see them growing what's supposed to be basil! The leaves seem to be a similar colour to the picture on the Thai basil leaves but they don't taste of a lot, although I've not had Thai basil before so wasn't sure what it was supposed to taste like. Dove from above, are your purple chillis from a 'purple chilli' plant? What's your plant called?
  • Basil should be unmistakably fragrant when you crush a leaf. If it's not, it's a chilli plant . And I don't think basil seeds come in pods like that either.

  • Petalootha - my purple chillies are Gusto Purple  http://www.suttons.co.uk/Gardening/Vegetable+Seeds/When+to+Sow+Vegetables/Vegetables+to+Sow+in+March/Pepper+Chilli+F1+Gusto+Purple+Seed_159886.htm

They're purple but turn reddish when they're ripe

  • I've got normal basil and that tastes as you would expect but I wasn't sure what to expect from the Thai basil. The leaves on mine are much darker on the gusto purple, quite purpley. I'll cut one of the chillis open and have a look!

These defiantly look like a chilli plant and its chillies , do you have anything at all that would resemble.  Basil?

I am thinking if so some chillies seed have got into the what should be a basil seed packet.

You could also check with the seed company.

  • Thai basil is very pungent and has a noticeable scent of liquorice when a leaf is very gently rubbed between fingers.  Lovely stuff - here's a pic of one of mine (the one in the centre):

I think Dove has ID'd your chilli. image
