Transplanting fruit trees

Hi all,

Can anyone please advise me on when is the best time to transplant my fruit trees (braeburn apple, conference pear and victoria plum) into my border?

I bought them in January and put all 3 into the recommend pots on my patio. The apple and pear have not produced any fruit this year at all, the plum produced the grand total of 2!!!

I have decided that I would prefer for them to be in the border instead of in pots on the patio, and really could do with knowing if I could move them now - by which I mean this month, not this minute!!image

I should mention that I bought the dwarf rootstock varieties.

You wouldn't expect fruit trees to produce much fruit in their first year anyway.  Indeed it's recommended to remove any that do set in order to direct all the plan't energy into establishing itself.

When you plant them in the border, they'll need to go much further apart than looks right at the moment as they will, of course, grow.  And you need to decide what shape you want them so they can be pruned accordingly.  They'll reward your initial care with many years of fruitfulness.

Oh - they'll need pollinators too (although I suspect Victoria are self-fertile).  Are there any other apple and pear trees in the locality?

  • Hi pansyface, I forgot to ask about teasing the roots so thank goodness you mentioned it. I would have panicked when I had them de-potted about whether to or not!! Great advice, thanks so much.

Hi Steve 309, thanks for your great information. They are all meant to be self pollinators or at least that's what it said on the garden website I bought them from. However, in the area there is at least 4 other mature Bramley apple trees and 2 mature Denbigh Plum's. Would these help mine?

Oh my goodness, you have lost me about shape and pruning - sorry, newbie .Do your mean trained against a wall or fence?  image
