Isn't this standard practice for runner beans?

  • We always did it on the allotments i was on, i think this way of composting seems to have fallen out of favour, i think its very useful image
  • Hi Oldchippy, yes it was only for six months but they've not made a decision yet and they've also given me a second half plot, so good news all round!

Steve 309 - yep, traditionally standard for runner beans although I don't know many people who practice it now (apart from my dad!)

...and me.  And my best friends.  And our other friend who runs a garden for....   It's alive and well in SW Lancs!

  • The problem I find with kitchen waste in a bean trench is that it tends to attract unwanted guests, Rats! and once you have them its difficult no in fact impossible to get rid of them. Just recently I have had to shift to another allotment because of the way my then neighbor was feeding the rats rather than his chickens. They bred to a degree where my tunnel 10 x 15ft was raided and beetroot tomatoes and other crops spoiled by the rats in question. The first time in 7 years. So no kitchen waste to the allotment for me. Shame about your waiting list there seem to be plenty of spare patches in my local Town.
