I was just out weeding and I've dug up a load of bright orange ants. Are they harmful to plants?

No more than any other ants - they can undermine the roots in dry weather - this may be of help http://www.antnest.co.uk/species.html

They're Essex Ants. Fake orange spray tan is a dead giveaway
