Swollen cherry tree trunk

I wonder if anyone can help me.  We inherited a flowering cherry tree when we moved

Into our new house.  In the spring we had beautiful flowers and lovely sweet fruit in the summer.  I had noticed a swelling on the trunk and sap leaking but recently it has got much more swollen.

the tree has lots of foliage but some of the leaves at the ends of the branches are starting to curl and brown.

Can anyone help with some advice about what it is? Is it a canker or a insect?  What can I do to get rid of it.  I'd hate to lose this beautiful tree in the first year of owning it.
