Can I propagate wisteria and vines by layering?

Hi - I've got a vigorous wisteria, and a vigorous vine, both of which put out loads of shoots etc

Unfortunately, both are growing on the same wall, so there's a bit of congestion! I'd love to get new plants off each one and move each to their own new wall (!), but is it possibly to propagate by layering the vigourous shoots?

I did try this with the vine last year - I drapped the endy pit of a shoot over a pot of compost and then pegged it in the middle hoping it might root, but it never did!

Do I stand a chance with this method of propagation?

Many thanks for any advice!

Layering is the method i prefer for propogation, but ive never tried it with these plants, another forum member (Lyn) said you can nick the stem before laying it on the compost which should help it root.

I have layered a Wisteria  floribunda macrobotrys. It took about two years. the layer on its own  roots flowers better than the grafted parent.

I propagated my vine from my grandmothers, by hard wood cuttings , about a foot long and pencil thick, taken in winter and put in a trench of gritty  well drained soil.

Spares `I gave away to other members of the family. My dad has been enjoying some of the grapes off it this week.

  • I read the foregoing with interest as a neighbour asked me about propagating his very old grapevine which is spread even over the top of his large metal shed. He thinks I know everything - sadly he is wrong!  I thought it could be done by cuttings, so I have passed Fidgetbones' advice on to him.  Thank you very much.
