Scabby apples

I've got a small apple tree at the bottom of my garden (don't know the variety). It only produced 1 fruit last year, this year there are fruits in abundance but they're all spotty/scabby. Is this terminal and should I dig the whole tree up or is it a condition that can be remedied?

  • Lulu just to let you know that I have the same problem but the fruit is still god to eat. all the best john.

  • could be bitter pit? caused by a calcium deficiency and dry soil,

next year water well when the apples start to form all the way thru till harvest in dry weather and don't use a high nitrogen feed (like sulphate of ammonia) use something more balanced.

  • Thanks everyone

I thought it looked more like bitter pit than scab.  Some lime or bonemeal (depending on the soil pH) would help, when they start to grow in Feb.  The 'head gardener' (ho ho) in one of my gardens always gives the apple trees some lime in the spring.
