bannana plant

in Fruit & veg
My mums banana plant 5 years old has started producing offsets from the side of the thick stem.does anyone know if they can be removed and potted on .if so how is it done please ? Has anyone tried this?
I would have thought slicing off ,trying to get a bit of the stem too.a bit like an heal cutting and keeping with a poly bag over the top until New growth starts.

Mine are doing the same, although they're a lot younger. I've read that you split them in the same way as you would aloe plants- ie take the plant out and separate then that way.
In real life that may (or will not!) be possible so I will be gently scraping back as much soil as I can and gently wriggling the offsets out, then potting them in the same mix as I'm using on the parent plants- a mix of sharp sand, grit and soil.
Unbeknown to me, they've been fed with either tomorite or miracle grow
But it seems to have done them really good!
I'll keep watching this thread as although I know what I want to do, I don't know when I should be doing it
If it's Musa basjoo you've got, the RHS say divide it in spring. But if the off sets are big enough, I've cut them off mummy banana with an old bread knife in mid September. Just cut down parallel to the truck and try to get some root on the off set. Trim off leaves to reduce water stress and pot up in gritty loam soil, place over winter in a frost free greenhouse or a cool conservatory. Feed in spring, bananas are greedy! Will take as much well rotted manure as you can throw are them!
