tomatoes

Hello I'm new to gardeners forum 

Can anyone give me advice my tomatoes have very thick skins what am I doing wrong

  • I read somewhere that it is the heat that causes thick skins and we did have a very hot spell.

    Sometimes it depends on the variety.

    Make sure you are giving them enough water.

    I am growing a heirloom variety this year .the plants have strong thick main stem.the plants themselves are a lot tougher than the cherry ones and yellow sunriseI grow too the heirloom ones are thicker skins  And seem to need more water than the others altogether .I have put it down to the variety as welshonion says.

  • Thanks everyone as you say it's probably the heat as they are in the conservatory but some are outside that have yet to turn red which would have been in cooler conditions but the same variety

    Thick skins are often caused by irregular watering: in time of drought they thicken up which reduces transpiration.  They can then burst, of course, if they get copious water...
