Snake Mark Maple

  • Hi Buddyboy

There is no sign of die back except what you can see in the photos.

The last crack is just the one you can see above the blue rope.

The kids do not use the tree to swing on, the blue rope is used to hang a bird box.

  • The leaves of the tree look perfectly healthy but small cracks are appearing on the large branches around the back where the blue rope is. Also noticed die back on one of the small branches above the bird box. My son asked what the difference between die back and the damage shown in the photos is! Not knowing I said they were the same eventhough I'm sure they are not.

There is no oozing from the cracks only white markings as the ones on the bark.

The long cracks face west and think they appeared after the had winter of 2010 but not sure about 2011.

  • it definitely look more like damage that disease? the no oozing is a give away.

anyone know how hardy snake barks are?

could it have been damaged by frost - especially if its west facing the cracks - damage caused by the sudden warming of the morning sun?

  • Hi Buddyboy

Tried to send some photos but was not successful, will try again tomorrow. The branch I described is not dead so it must the same as the other marks on the tree. The leaves are not turning yellow, just the normal leaf drop. The bark does not seem to be in good condition, has small cracks.

  • Hi Buddyboy

My family will be over the moon with your advice to leave the tree standing. Actually my life would not have been worth living if I had taken the tree down, so hopefully the tree will continue to live a long health life.

The leaves are as you described, yellow and maroon, natural autumn colouring.

Many thanks for your advice and will let you know if there any new developments with the Snake Bark Maple.
