Apple tree advice please!

Hi, my apple tree is looking lack lustre- it is a Laxton Superb half standard that I had bought from a garden centre and planted in a large pot this Feb.The leaves are "curly" and the tree looks lanky, despite managing to produce a few apples this year. I'm wondering whether there is some kind of serious problem going on- I've noticed some damage around the base of the trunk, the bark seems to be peeling off. The tree stands alone in a pot, so it was not damaged by a clumsy lawn mower or anything like that. Please see attached photos.  Thanks for advice in advance!!

My thoughts were a bacterial canker below the graft line. Burn it and get a new tree.

  • This is sad news for me! So in short, I could jump through all the right hoops to try to get rid of this bacterial canker, but the tree may very well still die a slow death over the following years given the location of the wound?

Are the apples edible on such a tree? They are large and beautifully reddish green.

I doubt if it will have spread as far as the fruit, and even if so I doubt if it'd do much harm, as long s they look OK inside.  (It's not a good idea to let them fruit in their first year anyway as it weakens the tree, but that's pretty academic if it's destined for the bonfire!)
