Ideas for all year round shrubs

I am looking for all year round interest shrubs, or very small trees that will eventually grow to about 2 metres high

It is a sunny bed, in Edinburgh, and a bit windy.

Any ideas out there?

There is pieris, pittosporum, mahonia, choisya, euonymus - all evergreen. Add a eucalyptus (keep pollarded) and a few flowering shrubs.

  • Thank you hogweed.  Pittosporum is a brilliant idea, had completely forgotten it and it would be perfect.  And I already have a choisya to put there, so we are obviously on the same wavelength.  Thanks

  • Cornus are nice, would be lovely mixed with some if hogweeds suggestions as they have brightly coloured stems in winter image

Holly and yew are nice, not shrubs, but not difficult to keep to a decent size image

Callicarpa profusion (hope ive got that right) has really pretty purple berries, very unusual and interesting
  • Thanks Bekkie, cornus good, don't know if there is enough space!  I like Callicarpa, but I think its too far north, doesn't seem to do here - ok when you buy it but never see berries again!

  • Yeah, callicarpa be a bit of a diva! I had 3, only got one now but that one is a good un image

Those katsura trees look good, not sure if it would be hardy enough tho image
  • There is a katsura here in the botanical gardens, but I think it might be a bit big for what I want.  Lovely tree though, haven't smelt it yet!

  • I think the tree in my garden is a katsura - I don't seem to get the sugar smell from the leaves but it is very pretty now with the leaves turning gold and orange. It was here when I moved in 15 years ago - not sure how old that makes it but it is pretty big now (about 30ft tall), definitely a tree! can recommend Daphne Artopurpurea Odorata.

  • Thanks both, Daphne is a really good idea, and I already have a choisya to go in the spot.
