Bug

Hi

Anyone have any idea what this is, with it's tail up in the air like a wee scorpion?  Tried to sweep up some leaves on the patio and out it scuttled.

Not sure which one of us got the bigger fright image

Thanks

    Hi Tanty

Think that might give me a fright too!

    Maybe a devil's coach-horse beetle - try this link

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

Thanks for that.  It says it can fly!  If it had taken off, I think I would have too image   Now to figure out if I need to do anything about it...

  • Devil's Coach Horse - Ocypus elens. Can give you a bit of a nip!

  • You don't need to do anything about it - there are millions!

    Fascinating things.

I love all those  crawlers and scuttlers around the gardenimage

I spend hours with book and web working out what they are and how they live

    In the sticks near Peterborough

If it moves quickly it is usually a goodie. If it moves slowly it is usually a baddie.
  • Baddie stick insects. Goodie hornets.

Thanks for the advice!  Fast good, slow bad.  I will remember.  Happy to let it eat spiders and slugs, next time I see a tail up, I'll give it some space to calm down!  Appreciate your help, very much.

It does eat slugs so definitely a goodie!  Never heard of it eating spiders - and of course they're goodies as well.
