I have five corkscrew shaped conifers, all in various places in my garden. All of them to a degree have dry dead patches from the middle to the top. Can any body suggest what is wrong?

They may have conifer aphid. Since there is no issue with flowers, you could try spraying with a systemic insecticide to stop the brown spreading.
Brown areas will not green up again, so you will need to cut them out and train fresh growth into the area.
