Pumkins, fruit but vines dead?

My pumpkin plant has two fruits on of a decent size but now the vines appear dead, the leaves are long gone and the vine is pale yellow and crumbly looking.

Whats happening?

Hi Chris - we are growing pumpkins for the first time this year, so i am by no means an expert.  However, ours still have very green foliage, so what has happened to yours does not look good.  Have they been getting lots of water?

  • I was wondering if they were orange, there dosent seem like much you can do, you will just have to store the fruit, which does look very healthy, and hope it ripens. Did your plants have a bad case of mildew? Its been such an odd year, i think many plants have finished far earlier than they usually would. The only other thing, if they were healthy plants, is that they have got too cold, but unless you live in scotland etc, i wouldnt have thought so image

It was our first time too, but it looks like mildew got the better of yours.
Unfortunately our pumpkin contracted mildew very early in the season, and I just kept removing all the infected leaves to try and stop the spread, it didn't completely go away but it certainly slowed it. I had three very large fruits from it for hallowe'en, which are ripening on the window sill.
I took the plant out over the weekend, which was still flowering and 30 foot long. They are just amazing plants and have such a tiny roots.

  • Ive grown squash of all different types over the years, this is the first time i have ever been so late planting, i didnt get mine in til late june! There must be something in this tho because mine are still going strong, i just hope they get chance to ripen before the weather changes for good! Only a tiny bit of mildew too, most years they get it pretty bad, will wait to see what the harvest is like before i decide if i will do this again, but it may be worth a go for others on here image
  • Leaves did go silvery and I chopped off a lot. Watered a.fair bit but not so much in August with lots of rain in London. So I guess it's best to harvest and ripen indoors? Thanks all!
  • Driving home through the Fens yesterday we passed fields full of orange pumpkins - large areas were pumpkins only, leaves had disappeared.  I remember this from earlier years.  The pumpkins appeared to be left to ripen.  No idea whether this is due to mildew or just par for the course but as I said, it seems to be common.

  • maybe a light frost saw them off?

  • i dont think we've had any frost. it did drop 7 or 8 degrees for a few weeks though. nearly had the heating on!

will keep an eye on them for a week or so then maybe harvest them.
