Saffron crocus

Last autumn I planted saffron crocus on my allotment. They grew without producing any flowers at all. Does anyone have any ideas what went wrong.

Karen, have a look at the link below, it may be your soil or growing conditions.

  • Its mostly down to two things depth of planting and when they were planted.

Saffron crocus require a deeper depth than the standard crocus if you are going to succeed with producing any flowers they need to be planted a good 6 inches deep.

Also they need time to establish in the ground before putting out flowers. Planting in autumn normally results in no flowers that year but you should get some the flowing year.

  • saffron only likes really well drained soil, any clay in the ground and they'll only leaf up and never flower

Hi Karen, its a real coincidence that you should ask as only this morning I read an article in this months country living, will have October on the cover about a lady who has saved her farm by growing and making a living with saffron

Apologies I do not have the answer but you may find it if you get the magazine image
