Buddleia puzzle

I would love some advice please. I have three different coloured buddleia Buzz plants in large pots on the patio. This is their third summer. One has flowered well for the last two years but the other two have lots of leaf and look healthy but have no buds or flowers at all. I feed them all with Miraclegro about twice in the summer months and they had a top dressing of fertiliser and compost in the spring.

Other buddleia planted in the garden do well and flower profusely. I live near the sea.

Please help!

  • They usually grow in poor soil and anywhere! Probably been overkind with the fertiliser and they usually enjoy a hard pruning right down to almost ground level. If they are in pots they have probably outstayed their welcome - they need to grow to flower.

  • Hi Devonviolet 2. I bought the 3 different buddleia buzz plants this year and they are in very small pots and all 3 have flowered this summer. I haven't given them any fertiliser, or to be honest much water. As Lizzybusy says they like poor soil so maybe just leave them alone and they will perform next year. They should be fine in the pots, because buddleia buzz are compact. image

Is there any sign of something nibbling the flower buds, one of mine has had possible capsid bug or caterpillar damage to some buds which haven't flowered unlike the rest of the plant

  • I think they can stay in pots or go in the ground, where they will grow larger. If they look healthy, then they are probably happy enough in the pots.

  • threw my buzz away this year --same reason--roots were fighting to get out of the pot into soil--no flowers
