brown patches on broad beans

Can anyone tell me what the brown spots and patches are on my broad bean leaves? Is there any way of preventing this in the future, and what should I do with the current plants?

  • Mine all went that way - sort of blight? Picked all the beans and pulled up the plants for compost heap.

  • It's called 'chocolate spot', tastequeen and doesn't affect the eating quality of the beans.

  • Thank you  for info,; how do I prevent it next year?

You can't really prevent it, but can minimize the chances of getting the fungus next year by not composting the dead plant material and not saving seeds from affected plants.  Like most fungi, chocolate spot likes damp humid conditions so plant your beans a bit further apart so plenty of air can circulate between them.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
