Slug Pubs

  • Okay Kef I admit it, I'm squeamish when it comes to bugs, can't touch them without gloves on but can't kill em either.  I'm a gardener and hate worms but positively encourage them by composting as much as I can (barr the slugs)

By the way do they make a bang when they explode or do they just hiss?image

Hi Early riser image I'm naughty at times image

They just crawl in attracted by the yeast ? and drown. Then I empty them into green bin, don't touch, don't really inspect. Then re-fill the pubs. image  I much prefer doing that to having salad  / veggies with slugs onboard image

I'm past caring about having gloves on to lift them as I merrily chuck them out onto the road into the path of a passing car....image

Thomas - I think no matter what methods you use, it's a bit of a waiting game and you probably need a several pronged attack plan. Getting wildlife in to scoff them is the friendliest way and the most rewarding for you - because you get to watch it - but it takes a little while to get a balance and you need to be consistent. I've never used slug pubs for reasons I won't go into, but many people find them effective. Physically collecting and disposing  each night when they're most active is fine unless you're like me and you're comatose by about half nine!

Once birds, hedgehogs and frogs/toads which are the best predators, find your plot it'll really help, especially in spring when plants are emerging, so keep feeding and encouraging them if you can. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
