Dahlias and Slugs

My newly planted dahlias have been eaten back to the stems. Is there any way I can rescue them? I've tried egg shells and other organic methods to no avail. Unable to use pellets. I wondered if I should dig them up, put it pots and care for them that way but not sure if digging them up would do more damage. Thanks in advance, Emma

depends how damaged they are and if they were planted as seed this year or from tubers?
if tubers then there's a chance that they'll re-sprout from the tuber underground.
any chance of photos?
Thanks TreeHugger. They are in varying degrees. There are some bits of leaves left on some but two or three of the plants look very pitiful.
They look awful but they were the highlight of my display
Thanks Verdun. I think I'll try digging up with as much of the soil as I can and try giving them a bit of TLC. In pots I should be able to protect them a lot easier. The above are on a plot of land just outside property so perhaps I'll plant something a little less vulnerable next year.
Ive grown all but 1 of my Dahlias in pots this year. The ones in containers have slight caterpillar damage but untouched by slugs.
The Juliet Dahlia I put in the ground is doing fine. The slugs seem to have gone for my Shasta Daises this year.
Best method is after dark hunting with a torch!
