astilbe

Hi all! My lovely, large, white airline has now finished flowering and I was wondering how best to cut her back. She's given a lovely show this year in a pot (no room left in my border!) and would love the same next year. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    I just take the flowering stems off Donna and leave the foliage to die back. Some people like to leave  them as they can be pretty with a frost on them, but we usually get lots of rain so they look messy rather than pretty! image

    You can just remove the top couple of inches of compost in spring and replace with new, and add a sprinkling of slow release feed  like blood, fish and bone at the same time.

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    That's fab, thank you! Will definitely be cutting the stems as we get a fair bit of rain here too. Thanks again x

    I leave the flower spikes on mine, bare ground is too attractive to cats for my liking
