I had one some years ago and was told that to ensure it had huge dinner plate leaves you needed to cut it down each year, which I did. Wish I hadn't that looks lovely. Mine died. I believe they grow happily in Canada even in car parks, so doubt it was the S.Yorks weather. Must have been my cutting it back.

Well, I have been cutting ours back to 12 inches every year, in February/March, for the last 18 years and it is surviving.
Unpruned it does make a huge tree.
