What ate my leucanthemum flowers?

Last couple of years I have had a splendid display and this year I ended up with just a couple of flowers. Got to the good sized bud phase and some started to open but then just finished up with no petals and black centres!

Do I persist with them?

We had a fine collection of the newer varieties of these, like Freaky and Banana Cream and others, the molluscs ate them down to nothing almost over night and so they died (the plants as well as the molluscs). So that is what could be eating your flowers. Persevere? that depends on how much you like them. We are going to replace ours when we find the plants on sale again.

  • The plants are still there, it was just the flowers that seemed to be tasty to someone...

  • We have had billions of the bar stewards this year, grudgingly I was reluctantly forced to use pellets sparingly to save the bedding plants and hostas...

  • We have three clumps (two in the soil, one in a plant pot) and they have grown significantlytaller (80 cms) than was indicated on the product tab. Ours are cream-coloured 'Broadway Lights' - as we say here in Yorkshire, "We're fair suited wi'em!!"
