I have a 40 year old Birch but this year it has nowhere near as many leaves as usual, any ideas why?

Silver Birch is a short lived tree. Sometimes they just die for no apparent reason.
clear the base of the tree of weeds and give a good mulch, it may revive.
ok thanks, I thought they lived longer than that! Next door had one for about 50 years and they cut that down because they wanted a patio.
