Crazy fungus

Just found this mound of mushrooms underneath my beech tree.  Any idea what they might be and if they are safe.  A pretty crazy yellow underneath with a weird consistency.

Looks like a bay bolete but there are several similar boletes. Even though it looks a bit weird when it goes blue when bruised the bay bolete is edible.

    Hi Peanuts image

Don't know - some things about it make me think Boletus edulis - but there's also things about it that make me think no - and I'm not an expert

Didn't see your post Steephill - it does look like one of the boletes does't it? image

Great, thank you so much.  We get a few huge mushrooms in our garden, must be the big old trees we have.  ideal conditions maybe.   Looks like something has been nibbling this one already so will leave them to it.

    Thank you again.

Yes, slugs love most mushrooms - even those which are poisonous to us.  I agree with others, it's one of the Boletus types.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • wow don't you just love it? I have a really weird fungi in my garden - it looks like fingers from the grave! gave me quite a fright when I first noticed it but doesn't seem to  do ay harm. Also lots of puffballs. I enjoy!

the only toxic boletus is the Satan boletus, its red on the outside and blue when cut open (if you eat it after those warnings you deserve to be ill!) this may be the one you've found, cut in half and if the cut edge goes blue coloured that's what you've got.

there is one that I mistake for cep and that's bitter boletus.  it's not toxic, but as the name implies its damn bitter and destroys any mushroom dish you make!
