Pruning my raspberries
Hi, ive been given a summer fruiting raspberry plant (Tulameen)
As far as im aware, its passed its fruiting period and should now be pruned.
Ive done a bit of reading but theres afew bits im still not sure on.
Ive read that i should cut the older red canes but leave the green newer ones.
Typically on mine i have several pre cut canes and one long branch that goes green from about 6 inches out of the soil. Should that one be cut aswell?
I also have some suckers coming up, what should i do with these? Just rip them out, leave them or transplant them? any ideas?
And while ive got you, i know i should add fertalizer to the both summer and autumn plants around March and June, any specific one for best results or just a generic all purpose fruit/vegitable feed?

first remove the green plastic tie thing so that the plant can spread itself out and you can get in to see what needs doing,
remove the canes that have had flowers and fruit on this year the to the ground as well as any dead or old canes (a tip is the older the cane the darker brown the bark)
as its in a pot I would leave the suckers (these are new plants trying to form after all) you can transplant them out in spring if you want new plants.
you might only have three or four new canes left after the pruning, after you've finished pruning give a good water and a fertilize, I would say a nitrogen rich one as you want shoots and leaves as the fruiting is over.
it might take a year or two of this pruning regime for it to settle down and produce good fruits, plus rasps don't like being grown in containers as they are hungry thirsty plants
Mine are in the ground, had some wonderful fruit from them, but now they have gone mad. I pruned all the old shoots off that had fruited but the new growth is enormous, tall and lots of shoots, probably more than I need, what should I do with it - give it another haircut?
