What shall i do with a 'Hairy Onion'?

Could these growths be the embryonic 'pips' that could form new onions if planted in fresh soil?

Hi David, alliums can do this - some even normally grow mini-bulbs instead of seeds (look up walking onions) on their flower head.  They will grow if you plant them but whether they will grow enough to produce useful size onions before winter is another matter.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks, Bob, for prompt reply: I'll give them a go in a raised bed that I can 'cover' if the weather deteriorates. Maybe they'll get to the stage of resembling Spring Onions?? (-before Autumn comes??).
