New Allotment but what to grow now?
in Fruit & veg
Hi everyone! Just got a new allotment a couple of weeks ago. Very excited and we cleared half of it yesterday. As raining today and not able to move much today with achy muscles I am planning what to grow. Is there anything that can go in now? I thought perhaps Japanese Onions? Can these be grown from seed or do I have to use setts?
Thanks!

As you now have a bit of spare space, you could sow some biennials and perennials for transplanting next year
Hi Scroggin and Bekkie
Some great ideas thank you. I was thinking about Broad Beans...would they go straight in the ground? Also fruit bushes as there are some posts and wires already there to train them on.
There are two fruit trees at one side, one apple and one pear with what looks like some rhubarb under them so I hope that we can keep that going.
At one side are some large trees as it is on a corner, I'm wondering whether I could plant some more fruit trees but not sure how much shade they will get.
If you look at thread 'growing times', by medavid ... I have listed loads of veg that can go in now or soonish.
Hi Artjak thank you, found the thread ans some great ideas there too. Looks like a few things are still possible to grow now so all is not lost!
Try not yo break your back , its new and you are full of enthusiasm, slow down or you might loose heart. Salad crops, garlic and onion later, Build a frame for
Raspberry canes they like partial shade, take cuttings now or order some stock from a nursery, redcurrant, and blackcurrant are a must,
only grow things you like and little and often is best but to avoid a glut. try to grow something new each year.
Such an exciting time, good luck

Keep on top of the weeds, easier said than done, they break the spirit of newbies on our plots so they give up!
Good gardening!
How about thinking of adding some bulbs for cut flowers so many that can be planted soon
