street damage

I have a white Himalayan Birch which my son decided to change by peeling away the white outer bark all the way around the trunk, about 24 inches are missing.

The tree appears to be surviving but the inner bark is brown and cracked. The question is , do I get rid of the tree or will the lovely white bark return? Would appreciate any comments and advice about this.

If the bark has gone it will die but that thin papery layer comes off naturally. I don't know the himalayan birch but as the native one matures the base of the trunk gets brown and cracked in appearance.

    Have you got a photo?

The papery bark must grow back, as Nut says it falls of naturally, might take a while tho, how old is your tree? image

Hi folks the tree is only about 6 years old, it was just starting to mature nicely. The dark bark underneath is intact so I guess I may hang on and see what happens, hopefully it will go white again.
