Welsh Onions

I am growing Welsh onions this year as well as lots of ordinary onions. Do I lift all of the Welsh onions at once ( they are growing in a clump )  or just split the clump and take out one at a time for use. Also do I use them the same way as other onions or are they really just for salads. The individual onions are reasonably large.

Any help would be grateful, thanks.

  • Hi, Rosyanne

I love growing these Welsh onions. A propagation way that has always worked for me, is to simply dig up the clump of bulbs in the spring (say March) or autumn (October) and carefully separate them into individual bulbs. Then replant them with the tips of the bulbs level with the soil surface.

This way prevents congestion of the bulb clumps.

Edit: We call them 'salad onions' some call them 'green onions', but they are usually grown just for salads.

Thanks David I will give that a try. Perhaps eating some, then replanting the others for next year.
