Growing apricots

I'm planning to plant an apricot against the south-east facing fence of our new veg plot, and fan-train it.
What area of undisturbed soil around it will it need - i.e. how close up to it can I plant my veg?
Would it be better to take the bottom out of a large tub and sink that into the ground to plant it in, and if so, how large?
Advice and suggestions please
