Step over apples

I really like the idea of step over apples - anyone have these? Are they complicated ? what 's best to try? Any tips or hints. I'm planning ahead and want to get it right first time!  If they are too complicated I'll re think image

There was a show on at the weekend by Alan Titchmarsh about 17th century gardens in which he planted a step over apple tree. It was on BBC on Sunday am so might be on catch up still. image
