Small Hedge Rows In Planters
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on the site, so please be gentle haha. I have been asked by a friend to make some planters so that they can plant a small hedge row at around 1.5m in height around the perimeter of their patio. The request is a little bit unique as the patio is at the front of the house and it is fully paved, therefore there is no room to dig a trench and plant the hedge. So my question is, is it possible to plant a hedge row in a planter?
The planter is going to be approximately 400mm deep, it will be fully lined with a geotextile and will have sufficient drainage at the base.
I am sorry if the question is quite vague, but I am more of a woodworker than a gardener, so please excuse my ignorance.
I would really appreciate some help with this.
Thanks,
Adam

Providing they keep the plants low, fed and watered, then yes, you can do it, although a deeper planter would be better.
But there is no question of it becoming tall or looking after itself, because that is not possible in so little soil - they would have to raise flags and make a good border first.
Hi Alina, thanks for the reply!
I will let them know.
I have my doubts that you would be able to grow a 4 and a half foot hedge in a planter that deep. Hedging plants are planted quite close together and there is a lot of roots in close proximity. So my advice would be no, it won't work. I would go for some diamond trellis (closer together than 'straight' trellis) and some climbers, which would also give quicker cover than a hedge.
Sorry, I missed the 1.5m on reading through.
In that case I think hogweed has a point - I was thinking more of something like a 60cm hedge.
