Winter pot and bedding plants

Hi folks firstly may i say what a cracking website this is i wish i had found it at the start of the Scottish summer, I have a very small garden that i am trying to make the most of and im getting it wrong along the way ha ha,

I have a long but semi shallow potting pot and i was wondering what i could put in this in the autumn /winter as my summer flowers seem to be coming to an end, I also made a bed this year in my small lawn and i was wondering what i could put in that over the winter?

Any help would be great folks,

Thanks,

David.

Hi David welcome to the forum image

You can try winter Pansy's, or try some plants for next year spring time daffodils - tulips - crocus - wallflowers - forget me not. Pansy/violias are a good start i still got some from last year.

It a little bit early for planting for next year, i think you can get more out of your summer flowers. What flowers have you got?

  • Cyclamen, Bellis, Viola, Primula, Polyanthus are all readily available winter bedding plants. Garden centers will be stocking up on these within the next month or two. Mini ivys, Buxus, skimmia, dwarf conifers, hucheras make good larger plants for containers to add structure and you can plant most of them out in the garden come spring as they are shrubs / perennials..

  • Sedum.  Winter pansies.  Viola.

I note the suggestion of cyclamen.... not sure precisely where you are but I'm in the Scottish borders in north Northumberland.   Cyclamen don't survive up here.   They're just not hardy enough to withstand our winter temperatures.

  • Thanks folks.....food(plants) for thought.....

I only have a tiny garden and its not very enclosed as its part of an entrance to a flat so trying to make the most of it
