saffron bulbs

treehugger80treehugger80 Posts: 1,923

I have a wildflower meadow at the front of my house and was thinking of planting some saffron bulbs in it, seeing as they flower in late autumn and the wildflower meadow will be cut down by then and the plus side of edible (and expensive) saffron! image

I've been looking online and there are lots of bulbs for sale, some are really cheap (which fills me with suspicion that they're not true saffron and I don't want poisoning with autumn crocuses!) I was wondering if anyone out there had bought some saffron bulbs? where from? and if they've had any luck growing them?

Buy it from a reputable company as Crocus sativus.

Not difficult to buy but I've never had a flower in all the times I've planted them, even when I lived in Saffron Walden where they were grown commercially in the distant past.

Agree. We have planted them a few times over the years and they have never re-appeared after the first  flowering. They need a real good summer baking in well drained sandy soil in full sun.

  • Hello.

I bought my crocus Sativus at sativus.com

They flowered very well in the end of October. I think it's really important that you buy bulbs with a circumfence of 8 centimeters or bigger (8/+)

On the website of this seller you can also find information about the saffron cultivation.
