training fruit trees

Yes, I've been watching "GW" and felt inspired by the way Monty Don trained the apples.

We have a pear tree which has been growing for less than five years in the ground- it is only about 3 and a half foot tall (from the base to the top of the trunk). The height, including branches, is about six foot.

Can we cut back and train horizontally?

Any advice or suggested links really welcomed!

Hope everyone has been enjoying the wonderful sunshine image
