Help identify plant please

image

Is anyone able to identify this plant found growing in my parents' garden in East Kent please? I've not seen anything like it and cannot even place the family. Thank you in advance.

    Hi Grey Squirrel image

It's Phytolacca americana - Pokeweed - as with many garden plants it can be toxic, although if properly treated it can be used medicinally.

  • Wow, thanks so much for the quick response and ID. I've no idea how it arrived in my parents' garden - by bird, or in soil / compost maybe. It's quite ugly but fascinating at the same time.

I think it's a fantastic plant - they can grow into quite impressive plants and are useful in wilder areas of the garden, as well as a 'statement' plant in the border. image

    Hi GSimage

There are several plants that come up for ID on the forum regularly when the just turn up in a garden. This is one of them.
