  • Rhus typhinia have large compound leaves comprised of many leaflets either side of a central stem.  The whole leaf will drop in the autumn - there will be loads more in the spring.image

Hi; wonder if someone could help? We have a large sumac tree which overhangs a majority in our garden but the trunk(s) are behind our neighbours shed so I can't see the base if it. Last year I thought it was leaning. About August the leaves started to wilt. My husband removed a ton of brambles from it thinking that was the cause but this year it looks likes its leant over even more and only signs are life are on a few lower branches. However the main trunk has growth sprouting on it but not on the branches. How can there be growth on the trunk and some branches but not all? It looks like its a 3 part trunk if that makes sense?

This tree is a lovely tree and provides so much privacy so will be sad if it's a goner. Any ideas on what to do?
  •  Last autumn my neighbour cut down his Rhus Typhina as it was completely leaning over our garden and because the root system was producing suckers In my garden. Unfortunately this did not prevent the development of further suckers which were numerous. Over the past few days I have had to completely remove around 15 foot of bricked paving so as to dig up the roots and hopefully prevent further suckers......I am still digging - I cannot seem to get to the end of the root system,,,!, I want to remove this pest forever. Do I have to completely remove individual roots or can cutting them some way along their total length do the job. Also where he cut down the tree new suckers seem to be appearing and I fear all my hard work will be to no avail If it regenerates itself and produces new roots which eventually start appearing in my garden. Help

  • I also have a rhus typhina that lost all it's leaves and left me with a stick last summer! However don't despair, come spring this year it flourished and looks absolutely wonderful this year!.
  • I am considering getting one; however after reading the forum notes I am becoming doubtful; can someone advise- if I make a deep barrier with plastic sheet- would it stop suckering?

  • My leaves seem to be wilting and not as healthy as usual. Could over watering cause this? Also the tree was over pruned last year and the leaves are smaller as well as the flowers. Advice please as to bringing the tree back to full health please.
  • I am about to prune my rhus tree ... I love its spreading habit, but it must be controlled a bit. I keep a constant watch for suckers, and either pull, dig or mow them! I provides good dappled shade, and hides the house at the bottom of the garden in summer. Thanks for all the information from everybody before me!

I have a Rhus typhina- it's been in my garden for 20 years & has been a healthy tree up till this late summer/ autumn. Reading this thread I now realise I should have pruned it more although I have done some pruning over the years. At the moment it suckers but not too badly. This autumn it's started to secrete thick goo like resin attracting 100s of wasps. Now it's looking very sad, no stags horns have grown & most of the leaves are dead & falling far earlier that they do normally. There are a few normal green leaves on one branch. What should I do please?
