The changing colour of Hydrangeas

I have three Hydrangeas in my front garden two blue and one a dark red. Each year they bloom with deep colours but it is not long before they fade or go a washed out pink colour.

They are watered well what can I do to retain their colour ?

Thanks

It's kind of in the nature of the plant benjy. They gradually fade and then start to show off  their washed, autumnal shades -  that's the only time I like the pink and blue ones which is why I don't have them!  image

Me too - I love the elegant faded shades of hydrangeas in the autumn - the blues usually have some wonderful mauvy green shades - when they begin to fade you can pick and dry them to produce the wonderful decorations you can pay a fortune for in fashionable shops

Thank you,I hear what you say but we are only just entering August and they seem to have only been in bloom for about a month and they are changing to a washed out pink already, I would have thought September  but isn't August a bit soon ?

Everything's been a bit early this year - my cyclamen hederafolium are blooming already.

And you've had them blooming for a month - that sounds like good value to me - I can't think of many shrubs that stay in bloom for a month. image

Mine are fading early this year - I think it is because it has been so warm and things are rushing along.

I have picked some of my blooms today to dry them for decoration - See Dove's link above.

Rowans are covered in berries round here. August is often autumnal for us - you can feel the change in the air even at the start of the month.

It's certainly cold enough today 15 degrees and very wet  image

My white oak leaf Hydrangeas  are just starting to open and there's a bank of greeny/white ones (Limelight  possibly) near my last house which will be coming into their own soon. They look stunning en masse. Perhaps you could add a couple of white ones to extend your season benjy image

  • dove I have two hydrangeas one white and one that changes colours but if  they only lasted a month I would be very worried my plants have been flowering for several months now and are still in full bloom.  john.
