Yup. Anything above low-20sC is optimum. The lower the temp, the longer they take.

  • I can't see the video. I saw it earlier - well a car advert actually......Wait a minute it's playing!! Keeps stopping and starting but it's playing

It says there is a problem with the video. I'm guessing by the date its not being checked by person who put it on :(
  • I am sorry, such a thing MAY work in the balmy, tropical south, but here, in central Scotland, when my tomatoes didn't ripen in the awful summer we have just experienced, I followed Chris's advice and the tomatoes are slowly rotting.

I'm in the NW johnlamond and only had a few toms which wouldn't go red or yellow so cut down the plants and instead of hanging them in a warm shed hung them in a warm GH. The toms which were turning red or yellow did ripen but those whch were green have stayed green, so I'm not convinced Chris's method works for green toms either .

Given time the green toms will ripen, but temperature is the key, not hanging them in a frost-free shed. If the temp in the shed is in single figures, the green toms will never ripen.

I've now, finally, been able to watch the video. I don't know how. Suddenly it plays when before it wouldn't. I think the video peddles old wives' tales. Tomatoes already on their way to ripening are getting next to nothing from the plant anyway. The plant's job is already done. The plant will be of no use to green tomatoes because it will be dead within three or four days.

Temperature is the key to ripening.

  • I have 40kg of green tomatoes, how can I ripen them. Only space available is in my house.

Time to put the central heating on. Well, it is here anyway, 2 celcius this morning.

  • I have the same problem lots of green tomatoes, read not to water and shock them into changing colour. Some of them are changing colour now I am hopeful.

  • Thank you unsuccessful leek. A friend gave me the same tip but I was not brave enough to try. No water this evening, nor tomorrow or Sunday....
